Spectrum High School’s Quizbowl team has been successful for years, qualifying for small school nationals again and again. This year a momentous one for the team as this was the first year in school history that they had a new chance, “This year we actually were able to do something that no other quizbowl team has done before, and that’s qualify for the larger national championship” said Brycen Jones, co captain and member for 5 years.

The large school nationals are much harder to get into as a smaller school due to the more limited amount of players that each team can have. Joseph Ambrose, a two year long member, said, “So large school nationals are in Atlanta and they’re the top 15% of teams in every tournament get to go to big school nationals”.  Spectrum’s quizbowl team has made it far before but now with the knowledge that they can make it as far as any of the big schools around the country, they will make it just as far, if not further next year. Even though the team can’t go to large school nationals this year, this opens up opportunities in the future for them to go further than the bounds of being a small school.

“My favorite part of quizbowl would definitely be the community, I love the people in it”

— Marin Burg

With the new opportunity comes excitement for the future of the program and what changes it can bring. As the teams success grows, so will the special bond made by the team. Marin Burg said, “My favorite part of quizbowl would definitely be the community, I love the people in it”. Each member has their own thing they love about the program, “Getting individual prizes is a real, real winner, hits the spot.” said Ambrose.  Sometimes it’s just using what you know to have fun that is the best part, “It’s kinda fun just to you know, use your random knowledge to beat other teams in games”, said Jones. No matter what people may enjoy, its always the experiences along the way that are the best.
