The most important part of a school, other than the students, is the teachers, and if there aren’t enough teachers to fill the classes, there will be panic and the void will need to be filled. Luckily, Spectrum was able to find teachers to fill our needs. Principal Mark Leland explained how we have hired three new teachers this year, Kristin Palmeiri, Tina Listerud, and Stacy Pinz.
However, those teachers needed to have perfect resumes in order to be put on the job. “When we hire teachers, we do an extensive background check so we look at all of their backgrounds. They come to us with different skill sets of course and depending on what their skills are and where they fit in the English department. They have to have the right qualifications, and last but not least, are they good people?” Stated Leland.
Some teachers had a bit of an advantage, like Palmeiri, who is known by the staff.
Credentials may be important, but they are not the only thing that matters to the higher-ups. “We wanna make sure that whoever we bring into the school is a good fit for our culture, they’re hard workers, they care about the students,” Said Dan Debruyn.
All of these requirements for teachers to be hired can make the hiring process before school starts very overwhelming and stressful. “My initial reaction was of course concern but at the same time I feel like Spectrum is a great school and a great place to work, so I always know there’s people out there, there’s candidates out there that are qualified and have the skill set we’re looking for, and we’ve just gotta get that communication about those open positions out in front of those people and let them know so they know that those positions are available” Stated Leland.
Spectrum offers college courses, and that means we need teachers with even better credentials to teach those classes. Principal Leland told how we didn’t have any teachers that fit the qualifications to teach Intro to Communications C@SH after Mrs. Johnson resigned. Pinz was hired later, though, who is fully credentialed to teach that class.
All of the open positions at the start of the school year before Pinz was hired made some scheduling conflicts, which were handled promptly. “That was really challenging, our counseling staff has done an absolutely amazing job, huge shout-out to Mrs. Klosowski and Mrs. Kobes for all of their work in regard to student schedule, I know it was extraordinarily challenging at the beginning of the year because of all of the changes and some of the changes that we had to make to really make it work for the teachers we had on board with us to start the year” Said Leland.
Overall, the hiring process of the new English Teachers at Spectrum has been overwhelming, but the staff has managed to pull through. This has been Tucker Marjama, Noise News.
