For the past 4 years, the Spectrum Girls Soccer Team has hosted a Kick Out Cancer game. It was started by Grace Beck as her Senior Legacy project. “All 4 years that we’ve done it, we’ve gone to the Randy Shaver Cancer Research Community Fund,” said Junior Captain, Maggie Novonty.
The team found many ways to include the Kick Out Cancer event with the game. “At the game we have a table out with like the donations and stuff like that just to make it known and aware throughout the game that that’s what we’re playing for that night,” said Novonty. To show support during the game, some players wore pink ribbons in their hair and on their cleats. In addition to that, outside of the game they made t-shirts and bought bracelets and pins to sell around school.
The game was successful. This year, they played Big Lake and Spectrum won 3-1.
“It’s always just an enjoyable way to take a hobby and a passion and combine them,” said Girls Varsity Soccer Coach, Nathan Kemper. Everyone enjoys putting on this annual event. Kemper said, “We’ve always left it as there’s a student that’s willing to help drive some of that initiative.” Every year they let it up to the students to continue this event. Since it’s started, they’ve carried on Grace Beck’s idea.
The Spectrum coaches, players, and parents of players all appreciate and have fun putting this together and seeing the outcome. Spectrum hopes to keep up this legacy for the years to come.
