Last month, Spectrum Middle School got to partner with Nigel and his handler Mary to bring comfort and cuddles to the kids in need of it. This month, we too got a therapy dog. We got to meet Eddie and Jen, who both brought new experiences and lots of excitement into Spectrum High School’s CCC.
What’s the point of a therapy dog?
A therapy dog or an emotional support dog serves many purposes, but the main reason for owning or visiting with one is to experience the unconditional love and comfort that they are able to bring. Think, have you ever been having a rough day and were in need of some love or support, but you were unable to receive any? It’s a very common experience, but thankfully, we are provided with therapy dogs for when things get rough. Having a dog to sit down and cuddle with can greatly impact mental health. When presented with something that brings you comfort, your brain releases dopamine and serotonin, which are hormones known for helping with stress and anxiety.
About the dogs
Nigel is a few years old, and Eddie is 18 months. Both are very affectionate and excited to work with the students in need, and have taken very quickly to the kids. While talking with Mary between interviews, we got to hear a fun fact about Nigel. His tongue is literally never in his mouth! He’s known for having his tongue out all the time, further adding to his uniqueness and charm. Each dog also comes with their own trading card and stickers, which is perfect for sharing with others.
What to expect
Upon entering the room, you’re immediately greeted by Nigel or Eddie! They’ll come up to you with Mary or Jen will ask you about your day, and then you can take a seat next to or with the dog. There’s never any shortage of pets or cuddles with them around! With Mary, you get to play this fun game where you get to share personal experiences and about how things have been. With Jen, you get to chit chat and see plenty of cute pictures. As your puppy time is wrapping up, you get the option of trading cards and stickers to take with you and share, and then you’re on with your day.
Conclusion
Having the Therapy dogs is really impactful and helpful for many. It’s a very enjoyable experience regardless of who you visit, and they’re making a huge impact for these students. I’d just like to give a big thank you to Jen, Eddie, Nigel, and Mary for sharing your time with us, and being amazing people. Please stop by the Office in the middle school, or the CCC for some quality cuddles!
