SVC: A Group Made For Change

There are many groups at Spectrum High School one of them being SVC, which stands for Student Voice Collaborative. “It’s a group of students that were put together by Leland and Skog to try and help improve the student climate of Spectrum High School,” said Riley Anacker, a sophomore representative. Principal, Mr. Leland is the main staff organizing their meetings. “Some of the different concerns Mr. Leland has, he comes to us about some of them and he talks to us about it and then we give our opinion and voice back,” said Danica Orth. Mr. Leland’s goal is “Is for them to be part of helping establish a strong culture in the school.

The process in getting into SVC is unlike any other group at Spectrum High School. “We recruit new members as they come into high school. And the way that we do that is we talk to the administrators over at the middle school, so Mr. Heinecke and Ms. Sommerstad. And we take recommendations from them along with the counseling staff over there. And then we extend offers, talk to those students when they’re early in when they come over as ninth graders at the beginning of the year,” said Leland. As the years go by, the members return. We have 13 members and oftentimes what we’ll do is we’ll add an additional senior during that year. Just so the seniors have a little bit more influence than the other grade levels,” said Leland. This small group has a lot of influence in decisions around the school.

SVC has done many projects around the inside and outside of the school. “SVC […] were part of establishing a plan, an initial plan for the parking lot. […] “Some of the other things that they’ve been involved in really have to do with again, climate and culture of our school,” Leland. They have also taken time to make teacher appreciation events. “We did the gold stars for staff,” said Anacker. This year, they did a week for the staff. “About a month or two ago, Leland came to us in the meeting and said he wanted to do something for the staff appreciation week in May,” said Anacker.

The teachers got many things from this year’s teacher appreciation project.”We came up with doing gift baskets and with coupons and stuff for the teachers. And we got Domino’s to cater some a meal or two,” said Anacker. SVC put in a lot of effort to make this possible. “We went to a different location of caribou and Duncan and we went to Target we went and we went to a bunch of these different places to gather coupons and then we got a discount for the baskets and we made baskets and they had like cute little flowers,” said Orth.

SVC gets a lot of credit for the big and little changes around the school. With the help of students and staff, Spectrum will continue to improve.
