Athletes from across Spectrum gathered for photos and team bonding as winter sports officially kicked off. This year, many teams enter the season with larger rosters, stronger chemistry, and renewed motivation, giving athletes confidence that this winter could be something special.

For some teams, strength begins with effort and work ethic.

“Tenacity, because we have a lot of people that like to work and are just dogs,” said Eli Miller (Basketball).

Others point to chemistry as the foundation for success.

“I think just the chemistry between everyone,” said Cassidy Colbert (Basketball).

Skill and execution also stand out as key advantages.

“I think our shooting and just the ability to pass the ball around and be able to knock down shots when we are open,” said Tanner Meneley (Basketball).

Several programs are growing, creating new opportunities and energy.

“I think the girls are really close, especially because we have gotten a bunch of new girls,” said Hannah Youngquist (Wrestling).

“Biggest strength is definitely the size. It is the biggest team we have had since the start of the program,” said Colin Connolly (Wrestling).

For Nordic skiing, culture is key.

“I think our biggest strength will be our team culture since we have so many girls trying Nordic skiing this year and everybody has really positive attitudes about learning how to ski,” said Hannah Boese (Nordic Skiing).

As the season approaches, athletes are eager to compete and spend time with teammates.

“I am excited to just be a senior and play with my friends and just play basketball,” said Colbert.

Some athletes look forward to new experiences beyond competition.

“I am most excited for the overnight trip. I think it is going to be a lot of fun to get out there with more people and just have a great time together,” said Connolly.

Before every game, match, or race, motivation matters.

“Just that I will be playing basketball with my best friends and that it will be fun either way,” said Colbert.

Responsibility and pride also drive athletes.

“The biggest thing that motivates me is making sure I do not let my team down,” said Joe Hanson (Wrestling).

Support from teammates and family makes a difference.

“Seeing all of my teammates out on the course really helps me mentally push myself,” said Boese.

With different goals, motivations, and strengths across every winter sport, this season is set to leave its mark on Spectrum athletics. What began on Media Day now carries into the first weeks of competition, where the effort and commitment of each athlete will be on display.
