Spectrum Sparks New Culture in Strength Program

With a brand new facility and a full strength and conditioning program, students at Spectrum High School now have access to something that did not exist before. For many, the new weight room represents a fresh start, not just physically, but mentally.

“I think the just the factor of getting the whole new building brought that newness to it and Coach Smith just happened to come along at the right point in time,” said activities director Mrs. Bondy.

That timing mattered. Along with the new space came Coach Luke, who brings decades of experience and a personal connection to strength training. His journey in the weight room began long before he ever coached students.

“In general, I’ve been coaching strength and conditioning since 2000,” Coach Luke said.

But for him, the weight room was never just about lifting heavier or getting faster. What kept him coming back was something deeper than physical results.

“You got to take a lot of personal responsibility by by showing up to the gym, pushing yourself harder than you thought you could be pushed,” Luke said.

For students, the impact often shows up quickly, even before physical changes appear. Confidence is usually the first thing to grow.

“I just always feel stronger and like more confident in like the things that I’m doing like especially in my sports,” said student Brenna Gray.

Beyond confidence, the program emphasizes support. Students are not expected to figure things out alone, and personal connection plays a major role in the culture.

“He like stayed with me and watched like my forms and my technique and like helped tell me like what I need to do better,” Gray said.

The program is open to all students, with in-season athletes training for free and others able to join at a low cost.

“And hey, for 50 bucks, it’s worth my time to come because it’s open to anybody,” Bondy said.

At Spectrum, the weight room is not just about getting stronger. It is about learning how to show up, push forward, and build habits that last long after high school.
