A holiday family buisness: 40 years in the making
December 20, 2022
For forty years Marin Burg’s family has been running a Christmas tree farm. Each year during the holiday season her and her family run two farms in Shurburn county in Clear Lake and Princeton. They also own some lots in the Twin Cities.
Marin’s grandfather is the owner and is still going strong. “It’s been in my family for about 40 years now. My grandpa, he’s the owner, but he’s been transferring ownership to my uncle.” says Burg. It whole family buisness with many of them heliping out during the holiday season. “I work there, my cousins work there, my grandma and aunts. We all work there during the holiday season.” Burg says.
Everyone in the family has jobs that help out the farm Marin says “I’m a greeter which means I stand outside in the cold and make sure everyone who’s coming in has a saw and they’ve got a map.” and she said “We’ve got cashiers which is what my cousin does.” There are more jobs than just that however Marin says “We’ve got shaking and bailing which is when you tie it up and get the loose needles off.”
Marin also told us about how fun the job was “Everyone’s just so excited to be there which helps a lot. It’s just a fun job over the holiday season!” She said “It’s just a really fun place to go, there’s a lot of fun holiday things to do.”
Burg also made some statements about how the farming of the trees works. Each spring her and her family go out and plant the seeds each spring. However, it takes a while for their work to be seen “It takes about 14 years for a tree to reach full maturity.” says Burg.
Marin also had some final words for us “Definitely come check us out, even if you guys aren’t going to come get a tree. We have wreaths and we have lots of activities and even just to come see me!”
While the Christmas tree season is over, make sure to check it out next year!
